Paul White | Time Travels
Opening Night: Thursday, Oct 31
As a whole the show will revolve around the landscape, the navigation of it and objects that transport or move us – cars / bikes / horses / planes etc – in both operational and obsolete or abandoned states. My previous work focused on abandoned/wrecked vehicular objects such as cars & trucks in negative space, with elements of the landscape starting to creep in as well.
In this body of work I am bringing the landscape in to more prominence and also have included figures or a life force – in some cases the works will include figures and their interaction within the landscape and with objects that are still operational rather than abandoned / derelict.
The thorough investigation of abandoned and empty spaces led me back to the human interaction with the environment or landscape via objects of movement such as cars and motorbikes. In a way I am capturing the moments before they become a forgotten memory or an abandoned machine. I do plan to juxtapose this imagery (ie. the pieces with life / movement) with elements of the abandoned objects, as in previous works.
The image base for this series is much broader and I am working with images from a range of time periods. As well as imagery I have taken myself, I have sourced some imagery from family photo albums, such as the motorbike pieces of my dad – and me as a kid.
So in this series I am taking imagery from different times and places to form more of a personal history or bio narrative, in a way mapping out a personal navigation of the world. Like the exploration of junkyards, by looking back at moments in time I am exploring memory and how place and time has shaped me.
